I'm wondering if anyone here has lived an healthy bipolar life medicated then decided to try a go living it medication free. I'm not saying going off medication on your own, but under the care of your psychiatrist and regular trips to your therapist.
My therapist wants me off of Klonopin which I have been on since 2000 for my generalized anxiety disorder. She cut my script in half and after the initial withdrawl I feel very different. My thoughts are more rapid. I didn't think Klonopin slowed them at all but it must have.
It would be very nice to basically get off any and all of my psych medication if possible and I have mentioned this to my therapist. It is possible to do this. I'm wondering if anyone has any success stories out there or stories that weren't such successes.
Thanks

Re: Medication Free. Have you done it?
Sun, May 24, 2009 - 4:48 PMYou're off topic. My OP is not asking anyone's opinion on whether or not it's a good idea to go off of medication. That is up to me and my therapist and psychiatrist when the time is right. My OP is about other people's experiences who have gone about it the right way and what it was like for them.
Now I know you're desperate to talk to me but it's not going to happen, but it's not going to happen. And save your usual passive-aggressive reactions because they are getting old. -

Mon, May 25, 2009 - 11:47 PMI apologize. That person and I have a past offline (we're basically neighbors) and he doesn't even know me as well as he believes he does.
Thanks for directing me to other threads on this issue. I was wondering why I couldn't get to older threads. I'm new to Tribe and slow to things here. I'm going to read through these.
Folks feel free to add anything there if ya like. I honestly don't bite lol. -

Re: Medication Free. Have you done it?
Tue, May 26, 2009 - 12:14 AMHmmm interesting.
My therapist has told me that going off of medication is possible as long as I continue with my cognitive therapy. But right now I'm trying to learn how to live benzo free with my anxiety disorder since I don't like the alternative they are offering me. I've been on the same medication for that since 2000. I will say that Klonopin will be the one medication I will miss and I almost left the place where I'm being seen due to them stopping this medication. This med had lowered my BP, my pulse rate and took away most to all of my irrational fears.
Anyway, to what I'm getting at, the goal of ever getting off of my other medication would be if I feel stable enough to do so and the stresses in my life are normal or low. Last but not least and most importantly... if my psychiatrist and therapist are in agreement. -

And you have BP as well ?
<Last but not least and most importantly... if my psychiatrist and therapist are in agreement. >
Yeah. I know a little about BP, dont have it myself - but someone close does.... that is why I am here... In business, one of the best things you can do is find the right expert and trust them (but not blindly).. so involving doctors is a good idea...
THere is another killer thread on this.. but I cant seem to find it. The search feature is not great here.. but I have been using tribe for ages and know my way around - and that helps a lot.. -

Re: Medication Free. Have you done it?
Wed, May 27, 2009 - 12:37 AMYou mean BAD right? Borderline Personality Disorder and if that's the case, yes.
If you can find that thread it would be great. I've had the same cognitive therapist for 9 years now. Unfortunately my psychiatrist changes on a regular basis but that's what you get if you don't go with someone in a private practice. -

Re: Medication Free. Have you done it?
Wed, May 27, 2009 - 1:13 AM<Bipolar Associate Disorder (BAD) .
Thanks..
For me, I think of BP1 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipo...#Bipolar_I and BP 2 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipo...Bipolar_II but all these things are just labels.. and actually the person close to me has been rediagnosed with Schizoaffective disorder en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schi...e_disorder
I have not heard of 'Bipolar Associate Disorder (BAD) .' - but I am just a lay person who has done limited reading.. -

Re: Medication Free. Have you done it?
Wed, May 27, 2009 - 7:57 PMI find that when i am medicated I feel like I lose myself. Just don't know me anymore... I weened myself off of my meds and at first felt a little strange like I was out of my comfort zone... it took awhile to get readjusted to feeling again and the racing thoughts was enough to drive me up a wall. I learned how to check myself when I started to feel overly excited and found other areas in how to manage myself... paint, write, finding new hobbies that help with my highs and the "delusions of grandeur" just wrote them down which came in handy cuz now I'm a little down so when I read it it helps me see the brighter side of me. It is not going to be easy the most rewarding part is that you'll reintroduce yourself to yourself.... and find that you may be one of the most delightful and coolest person you've ever met.
So for now KEEP YOUR HEAD UP AND YOUR SMILE BRIGHT :-) -

Re: Medication Free. Have you done it?
Tue, June 2, 2009 - 8:51 PMI'm glad this was bumped because I didn't see your response. Your experience is exactly what I was hoping to see.
Finding something constructive to do with my time and energy. I remember what I did before medication. I use to have moments where I'd (i'd almost call it obsessively) start to do something whether it was draw, paint or sew something out of scraps and just work on it. I haven't done that since... well..... my earliest of 20's. -

Re: Medication Free. Have you done it?
Wed, June 3, 2009 - 11:36 AMsecsip, my opinion is that you have adult-a.d.d. which very commonly sets in when someone is 35+ and usually is already bipolar ... this is what my doc. has told me ... that he sees this time and time again .....
a.d.d. makes people forgetful and etcetra ....(lot more to it but you can google the symptoms ...)

Fri, June 12, 2009 - 9:33 PMOMG Syn you tell the truth i always wondered if I too also have ADD the racing thoughts, the forgetfulness, I can touch like twenty different topics in a minute... its exasperating... the brightside is that I can multitask like a mofo -

Re: Medication Free. Have you done it?
Sat, June 13, 2009 - 12:05 AMyeah there's something that people with a.d.d. do or have called "hyper-focus" where they can focus extremely intensely on something alternating with complete scatter-brained-ness and etcetra
read up on the symptoms ... -
